"The OET line card enables Sorrento's service provider and enterprise customers to turn on new Ethernet services quickly, which means a shorter time to Ethernet transport and/or billable revenue. This move into a pragmatic and efficient Ethernet transport over WDM represents a strategic move for Sorrento to address a fast-growing market need." — Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder, Infonetics Research

Adding Intelligence to WDM

For businesses to prosper, their networks can no longer play the negligible role of data transporter. The job of the network is greatly amplified now that real-time video and voice are part of the equation — neither of which is tolerant to downtime. Service providers and telcos depend on mission-critical bandwidth and speed simply to offer these services, but they will need more than just status quo to face 2009's economic and technology challenges.

Sorrento is helping its customers compete and succeed by injecting more intelligence into the optical networks that carry IPTV, voice and data services to their users. How is Sorrento making networks smarter? By collapsing the amount of equipment that companies need to buy and manage, by building more capabilities into its WDM hardware and software, and by giving customers more control.

Sorrento's OET (optical Ethernet transport) line card is just one concrete example of intelligent WDM in action. Transporting multiple Ethernet circuits over multiple node WDM systems historically required an optical multiplexer coupled with a layer 2 switch. Sorrento has built more brains into its OET line card to accomplish the same functionality in a single product.

Intelligent networks beget intelligent businesses and Sorrento is taking real steps forward to empower both.
