Sorrento Networks’ Management Team

Askar Sheibani
Comtek Group CEO

Askar has been an entrepreneur from the age of eight. He started his telecoms business Comtek over 25 years ago in Reading, Berkshire in the UK. Today it has offices in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Deeside (HQ), Reading, Belfast and now the USA through the acquisition of Sorrento Networks. Comtek operates across the world, through its cutting edge telecommunications technology centers. The company has experienced impressive growth over the past four years and its customers include some of the largest international companies.

In the UK, Askar has been appointed by the Business Minister to promote entrepreneurship and business start-ups amongst young people in Wales. He has also been a business advisor to the Secretary of State for Wales and various other UK Government Ministers.


Gene Norgard
Vice President of Operations

Gene Norgard manages the operations of Sorrento Networks International and is directly responsible for manufacturing, repair, and development of the GigaMux product range. He has been involved with engineering development and manufacturing for more than 30 years, the last 20 as a senior executive. Gene was previously Vice-President of Engineering at Sorrento Networks; prior to that, he was Director of Engineering at Charles Industries and was a founder and Vice-President of Oasys Telecom. Gene has a wide range of experience, ranging from T1/E1 through to 100G optical equipment architecture and design. He holds a B.S.E.E. and a B.S. Business Administration/Finance from San Jose State University.


John Freebairn
Vice President of Business Development

John Freebairn is a director and vice president of business development at Sorrento Networks. He brings extensive experience from Nortel Networks where he was the Managing Director for five years. Prior to this he held a variety of positions in the Nortel organisation. John’s Nortel experience included heading up the engineering, quality and manufacturing operations at Nortel’s Operations Centre in Belfast, Northern Ireland; John also spent time as head of Nortel’s EMEA’s business and supply chain operations, which included logistics, repair and customer services.
